Barbara is looking to start a business and needs to conduct research into her target market. To do this, she should consider using both primary and secondary research methods. Primary research involves collecting data through direct methods such as surveys, interviews or focus groups (Hanson et al., 2003). This type of research enables Barbara to collect data that is tailored specifically to the questions she has about her potential customers’ wants and needs. Additionally, it can give her an insight into how they think, feel and behave regarding certain topics related to her business (Kotler & Keller 2016). The benefits of primary research include being able to gain first-hand information from participants who are directly involved in the issue she is studying which would be more accurate compared with second hand information (Sink & Tuttle 2009).
