Reflection on Nursing Informatics Skills and Impact on Specialty

Nursing informatics is defined as the specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and information technology to manage and communicate data, information and knowledge in nursing practice (Staggers & Thompson, 2020). As a nurse that works within a specialty such as pediatrics or oncology, I am aware of how important it is for health care professionals to possess up-to-date knowledge about providing evidence-based care. Nursing informatics can help ensure this level of proficiency by providing nurses with the ability to access pertinent patient data quickly and accurately – an essential requirement in my line of work.

The skills associated with nursing informatics are becoming increasingly sought after due to their profound impact on patient outcomes. The most significant contribution comes from improved decision making processes which allow more effective diagnosis, treatment and management plans (Baker et al., 2019). This has made it possible for me to provide better care for my patients since I have been able to keep track of their progress more accurately through the use of digital systems. Additionally, medical errors can be reduced by having access to relevant medical records at all times which helps avoid mistakes related with medication dosing errors or incorrect laboratory results interpretation (Dai et al., 2018).
