Peter Singer argues that eating meat is speciesism because it involves sacrificing the most important interests of members of other species for relatively trivial interests of our own species. In his view, this type of discrimination is morally wrong and should not be allowed to occur in an ethical society (Singer 1975). While some may disagree with Singer’s argument and believe that it is acceptable for humans to prioritize their own interests over those of animals, I believe he makes a valid point.

The concept of speciesism implies that one animal or group is being judged according to criteria which do not apply equally to all animals. Foremost among these criteria are the capacity to feel pleasure and pain as well as the ability to experience fear. By giving preferential treatment and rights to certain sentient beings over others based on arbitrary factors such as species membership, we are essentially setting up a hierarchy within nature where some life forms have more value than others (Knight 2012). This disregards the fact that each life form has its own unique characteristics and intrinsic worth regardless of whether they belong to a particular species.
