Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVAs), commonly referred to as strokes, are one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. They occur when there is a disruption in blood flow to or within the brain, resulting in neurologic dysfunction due to cell death or damage. While most CVAs are caused by a blockage of an artery supplying blood to the brain, they can also be caused by bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel that then leads to swelling or compression of brain tissue.
List the risk factors for cerebrovascular accidents and why?
Age is also an important factor; People over 65 have higher rates of stroke than any other age group (Ginsberg & Goldstein 2017). This is likely related not only their advanced years but also increased likelihood having more comorbidities such as congestive heart failure hypertensive cardiovascular disease because these conditions tend become more common later life .
(Go et al., 2014). Gender too plays role since women tend experience higher rate strokes than men although exact reasons why remain unclear (Go et al., 2014). Other risk factors include family history stroke meaning if parent sibling had one then person may be predisposed towards same outcome (Ginsberg & Goldstein 2017).
Lastly while many CVA cases cannot prevented it still beneficial maintain healthy lifestyle reducing some known risk factors discussed above. That includes engaging regular physical activity avoiding smoking consuming alcohol responsibly maintaining normal body weight keeping cholesterol triglyceride levels down through diet exercise . Eating healthy balanced diet rich fruits vegetables whole grains lean proteins limiting sodium intake essential part overall health strategy reduce chances developing CVA.
