In reflecting on your own child development, consider the ways your culture, race, and ethnicity affected you.

Growing up, I was surrounded by a rich cultural and racial diversity that had an immense impact on my development. My parents were both born in the United States to immigrant families, allowing me to gain exposure to traditional Mexican cultures as well as American ones. My mom’s family is from Mexico City and retained their language, customs, and traditions. On Sunday mornings we would often attend services at her old church where sermons were delivered entirely in Spanish. Meanwhile, my dad’s family was from Michigan and he was raised in an English-speaking environment with a more “American” way of life that included baseball games, football Sundays, hamburgers for dinner etc. This combination of two different worlds blended together perfectly when raising me and my siblings so we could experience both cultures without missing out on one or the other.
