The nurse-client relationship is an important part of the nursing practice. This type of relationship is based on trust, respect, and collaboration between a patient and their nurse (Smith & Parker, 2015). The initial encounter between a client and their nurse often begins during times of disruption, uncertainty, and unpredictability in the patient’s lives. According to Smith & Parker (2015), this statement can be interpreted as the fact that when people are in distress due to unexpected health changes or life events they require medical care. In order for them to receive appropriate treatment they rely on registered nurses who can provide them with comfort and guidance. Patients become dependent on nurses at these points in time because they lack knowledge or understanding as to how best proceed with their situation (Maley et al., 2017).
