The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulate healthcare organizations through the Medicare Improvements of Patient and Provider Act (MIPPA 2008). MIPPA requires that all healthcare organizations have an independent accreditation body to evaluate and certify their quality improvement and risk management processes. These independent accreditation bodies, such as the Joint Commission (JC), American College of Radiology (ACR), or the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), ensure that healthcare organizations meet standards set by CMS.
