The case study discusses a 60-year-old male patient who is experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and confusion after taking an antibiotic. Genetics can have a major influence on pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) processes in this patient. PK processes include absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of pharmaceutical agents while PD processes involve the interaction between drugs and their receptors to produce effects in the body. In order for patients to receive the most effective treatment possible it is important to consider how genetic factors may impact these procedures (Hou et al., 2017).
