Distinguish between the constructs of intelligence and achievement in terms of how they are defined and how they are measured

Intelligence and achievement are two different constructs which heavily influence a person’s academic success, but the terms have different meanings. Intelligence is defined as the cognitive ability to learn from experiences, understand complicated concepts, problem solve and adapt to new situations (Lubinski & Humphreys, 1997). Achievement on the other hand refers to someone’s “attainment or accomplishment in life as measured by a set of standards” (Gottfredson, 1981). That is, it relates more closely to how successful an individual becomes within their field or profession.
