The family structure is a complex, dynamic and ever evolving concept. It refers to the composition of a specific family unit and includes individuals related by blood or marriage as well as those not biologically linked who are considered part of the family. These members can range from spouses, parents, children, grandchildren, relatives and foster children (Lamb & Lewis 2010). The diversity within families is seen in their various forms including nuclear families (comprised of two married adults with one or more biological offspring), extended families (including grandparents and other supportive relations) and single parent households.
