Describe how the theory you selected can be used to guide the processes of assessment, intervention, and evaluation.

The Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is a modern psychological theory developed by Albert Bandura, which emphasizes the role of observational learning and social experiences in understanding behavior. It provides a framework for understanding how people learn from observing others and how their environment shapes their behavior. This theory can be used to guide the processes of assessment, intervention, and evaluation in counseling and psychotherapy.

Assessment: Assessment refers to the process of gathering information about an individual’s mental health status in order to make informed treatment decisions. Within SCT, the assessment process should consider two major components: one’s environment and one’s cognitive processes. The counselor or therapist should evaluate not only individual variables such as thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, emotions but also environmental variables like peers, neighborhood or family relationships that could influence an individual’s functioning. Through assessing these factors counselors are able to better understand a person’s current experience as well as past experiences that have contributed to his/her present functioning (Hockenbury & Hockenbury 2016).
