Patient-centeredness is a healthcare approach focused on providing care that is tailored to meet the individual needs of patients. It is an integral part of evidence-based practice (EBP), which seeks to improve patient outcomes by integrating best practices and current research into clinical decision making. According to The Institute of Medicine, patient-centered care “focuses on producing results that are respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values” (Institute of Medicine Committee on Quality Health Care in America 2001). Patient-centered care emphasizes communication between patient and provider, shared decision making, mutual respect for each other’s roles in the medical process, understanding the social determinants of health affecting the patient’s life context, honoring cultural diversity in healthcare delivery systems, as well as taking a holistic approach toward treatment decisions.
